Chrissi island...small, exotic island south of Crete!

(Scrolla neråt för svenska)

There is a small, incredible beautiful island 15 km south of Ierapetra, Crete, which definitely is worth a visit if you are on the east side of Crete. The name of the island is Chrissi or Chrysi (Χρυσή) which means the Golden island. It is also called Gaidouronisi - the Donkey island, due to the lack of roads I presume.

From the middle of May til late October you can go by boat to this wonderful island, with only two inhabitants (!), from Ierapetra.

There is a taverna, a bar and a small church. You can read more here: Chrissi.gr

I´m not sure if it´s allowed, but in the summer there are always a few campers on Chrissi island.

Lovely crystal clear water to swim in...

Kristallklart vatten att simma i...
Chrysi island belongs to Natura 2000, a network of nature protected areas.

♥ Greek beers to one's heart's content!

(Scroll down for English)

I was going to write a small post about "the 3 Greek beers" and had Mythos, Fix and Alfa in my mind...:)

Well...I really had no idea there are so many Greek beers! And Alfa is not Greek as I thought, but a Dutch beer produced in Greece as well as Heineken, Amstel and many other foreign beers.

Most of these Greek beers are high quality beers brewed in small breweries (microbreweries) with heart and soul! I hope you'll get inspired to try these, in many cases, local beers (Crete, Chios, Corfu, Tinos, Santorini, Evvia, Peloponnese....)when you are in Greece!

Jet set party på/at Skorpios! (and...Greek islands for sale!)

(Scroll down for English)

St. Thomas, 15 milj €
Strongilo ("rund") island, 4½ milj €
St. Athanasios, 1½ milj € (Passa på!)
Tokmakia island, 4 milj €

                                                             ▲Jackie Kennedy-Onassis on Skorpios

Skorpios, the island of Aristotelis Onassis, was sold in April 2013 to the daughter of the Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev for more than 100 million dollars(the exact sum seems to be a secret...).

The beautiful paradise island was sold by the granddaughter of Onassis, Athina Roussel, even though the shipping magnat had written in his last will and testament that Skorpios should be donated to the Olympic Airways (belonged to Onassis 1956-1974) or to the Greek state in case his inheritors couldn't or didn't want to take care of the island.
▲Ekaterina with her father, Dmitry Rybolovlev

Now it's party time on the island for 3 days. The daughter of the billionaire and the owner of the island, Ekaterina Rybolovleva, has her 25th birthday and this has to be celebrated...!

The invited guests (princes, footballplayers and so on) arrived in luxurious yachts or private jet planes. Somehow they forgot to invite me. The Greek singer Paschalis Terzis and the super star Beyoncé will be entertaining the rich and famous guests.

Maybe you also would like to have your own Greek island for your birthday parties? There are a few on sale for a bargain:
St. Thomas, 15 million €
Strongilo ("round") island, 4½ million €
St. Athanasios, 1½ million € (Opportunity!)
Tokmakia island, 4 million €

Have a nice afternoon!

Old black and white photos of Heraklion, Crete!

This post in Swedish: Gamla svartvita fotografier från Heraklion, Kreta

When on Crete this summer I found these lovely old black and white pictures of Heraklion:

Dikeosinis street, 1950. The Lion square is a little bit down on the road to the left and the market street is to the right.

"The Lion Square" because of the lions on the Morosini fountain. The official name of the square is Elefheriou Venizelou. 1950.

The central market is on the street named "1866". Most often called "the market street". This picture is also from 1950.

Another market in Heraklion, long time ago. Anyone knows where this photo was taken?

Dikeosinis street from Platia Eleftherias (Astoria). "Ta dikastiria" - the Courts are in the building to the left. Probably around 1950.

25th August street, 1940. This very busy street became a pedestrian street about 5 years ago.

This picture is taken from the same place as the first, but 20 years earlier, 1930.

This photo is from 1902! The name of the city had recently (1898) been changed to Heraklion from Candia. The beautiful Venetian Basilica of Saint Mark is to the right.

The "Olympic Champion" of ANEK

Home again!
We were travelling with this nice, big ferry, "Olympic Champion", which
started to operate the line Pireas- Heraklion this summer. Built 2000, takes 1850 passengers and lots of cars and trucks of course. The ship belongs to ANEK (Ανώνυμη Ναυτιλιακή Εταιρεία Κρήτης Α.Ε.), which is a Cretan company founded after a big accident 1966 when a ferry sank.

Really nice paintings on the walls...

Two big ferries are leaving from Pireas to Heraklion and vice versa every day. They are leaving at about 9 o'clock at night and are arriving at 05.30.

But the dogs' cages were beneath contempt! Most of them were not even possible to close! Broken with holes here and there, rusty...Ugh, Anek! Get better - safety also for animals, thanks!

ANEK lines F/B "Kriti" (also Igoumenitsa and Patras, as well as other destinations: ANEK)
Minoan lines (also Corfu, Igoumenitsa and Patras)
